Ireland is a land steeped in mythology and ancient energy, and nowhere is this more palpable than in the Burren.
For those seeking Sacred Places in Ireland offers a unique opportunity to connect with a history that stretches back over 5,000 years.
At the Burren Yoga Retreat, we don’t just see these sacred sites as archaeological markers; we see them as living testaments to a time when humanity lived in deep harmony with the rhythms of the Earth and Nature.
Our retreats are designed to take you beyond the typical tourist paths, allowing you to experience and connect with the spiritual resonance of these ancient places.
The Burren is often described as a “vast outdoor cathedral.” It is home to over 90 megalithic tombs, ancient stone forts, and early Christian monastic sites. When you join us for an Ireland escape, we include guided outings to several of these sacred sites in Ireland. Exploring these monuments is a form of meditation in itself. As you stand before a Neolithic portal tomb or sit by a hidden holy well, the “busy-ness” of the modern mind begins to fall away, replaced by a sense of timelessness and peace. This connection to the land is what makes our wellness breaks so transformative.
One of the most iconic ancient sites in Ireland is the Poulnabrone Dolmen, located just a short drive from our retreat centre.
Standing on the high limestone plateau, this dolmen has watched over the Burren for five millennia.
Archaeologists call this dolmen a portal tomb because bones were found under the dolmen. But what the arachnologists don’t tell you is that the bones were only a few thousand years old… whereas the dolmen is 5.5 thousand years old.
This sacred site of Poulnabrone dolmen was more likely to have been an altar or a special ceremonial site rather than being built as a burial site.
Other burial sites of that time were portal tombs which look completely different.
This dolmen is raised to the sky and we can only speculate about what gatherings used to happen here.
We sometimes visit this site during our guided walks, allowing our guests time to soak in the atmosphere. There is a specific quality of energy here—a grounding, steadying presence—that perfectly complements the internal work we do in our yoga and meditation classes. It is “food for the soul” in its purest form.
Beyond the famous megaliths, the Burren is dotted with lesser-known spiritual places in Ireland.
We frequently visit local Holy Wells, which have been places of pilgrimage and healing for centuries.
These sites, often tucked away in hazel groves or at the base of limestone cliffs, offer a sense of sanctuary and renewal.
One holy well is located at Saint Colman’s cave where he mediated for 7 years back in the 6th Century. It is located behind the hill which is next to the Burren Yoga Retreat. The energies there are beautiful.
We also explore the ruins of ancient monastic settlements, such as Corcomroe Abbey, where the “silence of the stones” provides a perfect place to sense and feel the energies. These outings are not strenuous hikes but gentle journeys into the heart of Irish heritage.
We understand that visiting a sacred site in Ireland can be a deeply personal experience.
That is why our retreats are kept small, with a maximum of 18 guests.
This ensures that our guided outings remain intimate and respectful.
Whether you are a history buff, a spiritual seeker, or simply someone who loves being in Nature, our team ensures that you feel supported and informed.
Dave and our experienced guides share the stories and folklore of these places, bringing the history of the Burren to life in a way that is engaging and inspiring.
Our philosophy at the Burren Yoga Retreat is that wellness is holistic. It isn’t just about what happens on your yoga mat; it’s about how you relate to the world around you.
By visiting these sacred sites of Ireland, you gain a broader perspective on life and your place within it.
Many of our guests find that the insights they gain while standing in an ancient stone fort or walking a limestone ridge stay with them long after they have returned to their everyday lives.
This is the essence of a true holistic tour in Ireland—an experience that nourishes the body, clears the mind, and inspires the spirit.
