The soil in the Burren is mainly alkaline as the rock is limestone. However during the ice ages, the glaciers deposited large deposits of acidic rock from Connemara amojgst the alkaline soil.

So flowers that will only grow in acidic soil can be seen next to those that wll only grown in alkaline soil.

This is one the rasons why botanists from all ove the worlkd travel to see the Burren wild flowers.
